Meet the Candidate: Michele Bachmann

In Current News, Politics, Presidential Candidates on August 15, 2011 at 2:26 pm

It’s not classified information that Congresswoman Michele Bachmann of Minnesota (R) is vying for the presidency. However, what she does seem to want to keep classified is the way in which she presents her views and beliefs. This morning on Meet the Candidate with David Gregory on MSNBC, Bachmann was obviously uncomfortable as Gregory grilled her on her political past. He mentioned quite a few instances in which she had denounced gays and lesbians, stated that a wife must be submissive to her husband, etc. Unsurprisingly, however, Bachmann dodged the many questions she was asked about these instances, and, instead, answered each question with a sharp, “I’m running for the president of the United States,” or “I don’t judge”.

Just Kids: A D.I.Y. Interview with Sunrise and Ammunition

In Current News, Interview, Music, Pop Culture, Rock on August 14, 2011 at 5:11 pm

[This Interview was conducted by Emily Vega on December 23rd, 2010]

I’m sitting on a couch upstairs in Chris Branton’s house with Sunrise & Ammunition, Friendswood’s up-and-coming progressive rock band, and my heart is beating out of my chest. I’m pretty sure theirs are, too. For the band and me, this is our first interview ever. I’m armed with naught but a determination of journalistic integrity, and a stolen tape recorder from my friend Monica with a blank tape. (Tape recorder and a cassette? Vintage!)

So, to get this started off, state your name and what you do in the band.

Tyler Saucier: I’m Tyler, I play guitar and sing.

Chris Richardson: I’m Chris, I play bass.

Chris Branton: I’m Chris, I play drums and also sing.

Let’s get started. Teenage boys in a band, writing music, putting together tours…it’s a lot of responsibility to go out there by yourselves. Do you have to control yourself in any way? To be frank, you guys are more mature than the average teenage guy. Up front.

Let it be known, I strongly hate it and completely disagree when people say that men can’t be feminists.

In Current News on August 1, 2011 at 1:13 pm

Why can’t they be feminists? I just find it ridiculous.

Supporting women’s rights shouldn’t be some exclusive Girls’ Club. No political movement should be gender-exclusive. We’re fighting so hard to break down the “Boys’ Club” mindset, and some people, who may or may not be feminists, are saying that men can’t join in on the action? Not all men are insufferable misogynists, just like not all women are feminists! Some men are feminists, AND THAT IS TOTALLY OKAY AND AWESOME.

Anyone can be a feminist if they have the want to, in the words of bell hooks, ”end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression,” male-identified, or not. bell hooks even wrote a (very good, very well-written) book called “Feminism is for Everybody.” Notice she wrote, “everybody,” not, “Everybody (Except Those People We Call Men).”

Lately everyone’s realizing the term “gay marriage” is ridiculous. The term “male feminist” is also ridiculous in that sense. You don’t gay park or gay shop, just like you don’t male breathe or male read.

Egalitarianism is what we’re fighting for, right? Let’s keep it that way.

Fans of Winehouse took to several forms of social media to express their sadness for the loss of one of their favorite artists. Already, Amy Winehouse is a trending topic on Twitter and there is a page on Facebook dedicated to mourning her.
